The present work was studied by researcher Ellis Dullaart in 2016 who related the view of Rome in the background of the landscape with three anonymous drawings, two of them from the surroundings of Guilliam van Nieulandt II and another by the artist Gillis van Coninxloo II. In these landscapes, the hospital and the church of Saint John Lateran in Rome can be seen in the distance. The same researcher has suggested that the main figures in the foreground were made by another anonymous Dutch painter from the 17th century.

A hitherto unpublished work, this moving Ecce Homo derives compositionally from another model by the painter that came onto the market recently. There are several versions of the same theme that we know from the Burgos painter, such as the two specimens that appear in the Museum of Burgos (repositories of the Prado Museum) or the one in the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest.

This work could be recorded in the painter's prime years, before his premature death, when he was immersed in numerous commissions, most of them from religious institutions of the Villa and Court.

His vibrant and undone brushstrokes with which he recreates the lacerating incarnations of Christ are combined with other denser and darker ones that allow him to express the drama of an image of devotion conceived to move the devout spectator.
