Lot 0058 . PEDRO DE ORRENTE - Assumption of the Virgin
PEDRO DE ORRENTE
Murcia 1580 - Valencia 1644
Assumption of the Virgin
Oil on canvas
Measures 146 x 78 cm
Origin:
- Barcelona, private collection.
It may be the lost canvas of this theme from the altarpiece of the Concepción de Murcia, in which Orrente paints four canvases with the following themes: Adoration of the Shepherds, Adoration of the Kings, Annunciation and Assumption of the Virgin. This work looks unfinished, which may be due to the fact that Orrente did not finish the commission when he suddenly moved to Valencia, leaving the commission in the hands of Lorenzo Suárez, also a painter; the latter had to complete the set with another four canvases of the Evangelists from the bank.
The altarpiece was dismantled by the Fontes family, patrons of the chapel, and replaced by an altarpiece by Francisco Salzillo that was destroyed in 1931.
Orrente's paintings remained in the hands of his descendants until Don José Fontes sold the Adoration of the Shepherds to the Museum of Murcia in 1929. The Annunciation (148 x 84 cm) fell to the other family branch in Madrid.

Lot 0059 . SEBASTIÁN LLANOS Y VALDÉS - Adoration of the Shepherds
SEBASTIAN LLANOS Y VALDES
Seville v. 1605 - 1677
adoration of the shepherds
Oil on canvas
Measures 122 x 181 cm
This painting is attributed to the production of the Sevillian painter Sebastián de Llanos y Valdés (h.1605-1677), one of the founders of the San Lucas Drawing Academy (1660). It is an Adoration of the Shepherds (Luke 2, 15-21) in which the clear protagonist is the Child Jesus. Around him are the shepherds, the Virgin and Saint Joseph on a neutral background. At the back of the painting and with a very dark intonation are the mule and the ox.
There are similarities with a contemporary painting from which Llanos y Valdés could have been inspired; by Antonio del Castillo (1616-1668), Nativity, Hispanic Society, New York (fig.1), famous painter in Seville of religious subjects. The production of Llanos y Valdés is directly related to that of Herrera el Viejo (c.1590-1654), but with a more Zurbaran-esque sense that materialized in chiaroscuro and the inclusion of small still lifes, giving the painting a more humanistic sense. In the Spanish seventeenth century, religious-themed painting tried to adopt a more everyday sense to bring the faithful closer.

Lot 0060 . ANTONIO DEL CASTILLO Y SAAVEDRA - Adoration of the Kings
ANTONIO DEL CASTILLO Y SAAVEDRA
Cordoba 1616 - 1668
Worship of the Kings. 1639?
Oil on canvas
Signed and dated (remains)
Measures 111 x 159 cm
Origin:
Private collection, Madrid.
His painting remained in the line of naturalism, moving away from the new baroque formulas and enduring in the Zurbaranesque aesthetic. Antonio del Castillo worked with a more personal style in works of a narrative nature and monumental composition, as in this case.
It is a picture of a religious matter that narrates The Epiphany of the Lord; set in an exterior that simulates the entrance to a temple. The Holy Family, located to the right of the painting, receives the presents of the three Wise Men. There is a version of this painting attributed to the painter found in the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta (Córdoba), with a similar dimension and composition, which is also signed. It is, together with this work, the only two signed and dated versions. The coloring of the painting focuses on the folds of the protagonists; the Holy Family and the Three Wise Men, leaving the dark tones for the background and creating a certain contrast. The treatment of light in the painting seems to emanate from the left side, which affects the folds of the characters.
