Lot 1291. Michael Thonet for Gebrüder Thonet 1884 Tilting chaise-longue (Schaukel-sofa or rocker-bed) nº 7500
Michael Thonet for Gebrüder Thonet 1884
Tilting chaise-longue (Schaukel-sofa or rocker-bed) nº 7500
Manufactured by Gebruder Thonet in Vienna around 1884, production time unknown.
Made of steam-bent beech wood and Vienna grid. Bottom stamped with THONET.
Measurements 100 x 64.5 x 177 cm
It was presented for the first time at the Philadelphia World's Fair of 1876, in the format without armrests. The first time it appears reproduced in a catalog was the one made for the Paris Universal Exposition of 1878. But it was not until the one held in Chicago in 1892 that it appeared with the armrests. This is how it is reproduced on the cover of Alexander von Vegesack's book on Thonet, Thonet. Classic Furniture in Bent Wood and Tubular Steel, edited by Rizzoli in New York in 1997.
The structure makes virtuoso use of the latest possibilities of steam-based wood bending technology and even weaves decorative loops at the ends - additional static reinforcement, visually absorbing the swinging movement.
