Double-sided Louis XVI wall clock in gilt bronze.
The round white enamel dial, signed "Robin/Hger du Roi", indicates the hours in Roman numerals and the five-minute intervals in Arabic numerals by two perforated gilt bronze hands. The sound movement of the hours and half hours is housed in a round case framed by chiseled drops and topped by a flame. A bronze bracket with scrolls and plant motifs supports the clock through a chain of unequal links.
Robin Robin, was one of the most important Parisian watchmakers of the last third of the 18th century. He received the honorary titles of Valet de Chambre-Horloger Ordinaire du Roi et de la Reine in 1783 and 1786. He enjoyed an extraordinary career, distinguished himself by his exceptional contribution to the improvement of time-measuring instruments.
He always worked with the best craftsmen of the time, including the bronzers and hunters Robert and Jean Baptiste Osmond, Pierre Philippe Thomire, François Rémond and Claude Galle, the cabinetmakers Jean-Henri Riesener, Ferdinand Schwerdfeger and Adam Weisweiler, the enamellers Barbezat, Dubuisson, Merlet and Coteau for the spheres, and Richard and Montginot for the springs.
His works appear in different museums such as: Metropolitan New York, Victoria and Albert in London, Louvre Museum, Decorative Arts in Paris, etc.
