The present work corresponds to the prototype or model of the female portrait that brought so much success to the painter from Córdoba during his prolific career as a painter. These portraits or busts were widely demanded by the Spanish bourgeoisie during the decades of the 1920s and 1930s. From his central home-studio on Pelayo Street, where the great writers of the time such as Azorín and Valle Inclán passed, Romero de Torres immortalized numerous personalities, mostly aristocrats and prestigious professionals.

These works show the fascination of the painter from Cordoba for the portraits of the Italian Renaissance, such as the one he admired Leonardo da Vinci. The scheme is usually always the same; the torso portrait of the effigy on a neutral or dim background in which a landscape is outlined.

The Sevillian painter José Villegas Cordero made a dozen self-portraits during his prolific career as a painter. Like other artists who preceded him, he found in this genre a path of introspection and artistic experience that allowed him to produce works of true intellectual curiosity.

This self-portrait was painted when the artist was seventy-two years old. The painter takes a three-quarter self-portrait, leaning to his left and with his gaze directed towards the viewer from a low point of view, which infers greater drama from the expression. Unlike other portraits of youth, the artist uses a more synthetic brushstroke, concentrating all his attention on the face, which does show a more elaborate technique reminiscent of Rembrandt's last self-portraits.
